Best GSM for a Hoodie in India: 300 vs 400 vs 500 Explained
For most of India, 350 to 400 GSM is the best hoodie weight. It is warm enough for a Delhi January night, but it will not turn you into a sweat bag in a Bhopal December afternoon. Go 300 GSM if you live south of the Vindhyas, and 450+ only if you spend real time in the hills.
That is the short answer. The longer one is about why GSM alone lies to you, what fleece lining does, and the 60-second check I do on any hoodie before buying.
What is GSM in a hoodie?
GSM means grams per square metre. It is the weight of one square metre of fabric. A 400 GSM hoodie uses roughly twice as much fabric by weight as a 200 GSM t-shirt, so it feels denser, drapes heavier and holds more heat. It measures weight, not warmth, which is the catch we get to below.
Hoodie GSM at a glance
| GSM | How it feels | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 180 to 250 | Light, breathable, almost a thick tee | AC rooms, gym, monsoon evenings | Not a winter hoodie, whatever the tag says |
| 250 to 350 | Soft, easy, layers well | Oct to Nov, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Mumbai | Cold in Delhi or Chandigarh after Dec 15 |
| 350 to 400 | Structured, cosy, holds its shape | Dec to Feb across central and north India | Cheap versions pill fast |
| 450 to 500+ | Heavy, boxy, warm on its own | Hill stations, Himachal, Uttarakhand, Kashmir trips | Too hot for most Indian afternoons |
The ranges follow what hoodie makers publish for seasonal weights. One seasonal GSM guide puts 300 to 400 GSM as the sweet spot for most retail markets, with 350 to 500+ reserved for real winter.
Why GSM alone does not tell you how warm a hoodie is
Two hoodies can both say 400 GSM and feel nothing alike. The lining decides it. A brushed fleece back traps air against your body. A flat terry back does not. A 300 GSM hoodie with a proper fleece lining can beat a 400 GSM one with an untreated back.
So ask three things before you trust a number: what is the inside like, what is the cotton, and has the fabric been pre-washed? A soft, slightly fuzzy inside means fleece. A smooth, loopy inside means terry, which is better for transition weather than for cold nights.
Which GSM for which Indian city?
This is where most buying guides go quiet, because they are written for Europe. Here is how I would pick.
Delhi, Chandigarh, Lucknow, Jaipur: 400 GSM. Nights drop into single digits in January and the cold is damp. You want a thick fleece hoodie you can wear under a jacket on the metro or on a bike.
Bhopal, Indore, Nagpur: 350 to 400 GSM. Mornings in December are properly cold, afternoons are warm. A mid-heavy hoodie you can unzip or strip off is the right call. I would lean 350 if you hate sweating, 400 if you ride a bike to college.
Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Bengaluru: 250 to 320 GSM. A 400 GSM hoodie here is a flex you will regret by 2 pm. Go lighter and enjoy it for four months instead of two weeks.
Hills and trips: 450+ GSM, or any hoodie you can layer under a shell. Manali in December is not a hoodie-only situation.
Fit changes how heavy a hoodie feels
An oversized hoodie at 400 GSM carries a lot of fabric. That is the look, but it also means more weight on your shoulders and more bulk under a jacket. If you plan to layer, size true to your regular fit or go one up, not two. If it is a standalone statement piece, go full oversized and let it hang. The same sizing logic applies to tees, and our oversized t-shirt range is a good place to test your size first.
The 60-second fabric check before you buy
- Turn it inside out. Brushed, soft, slightly fuzzy means fleece. Flat and loopy means terry.
- Check the fibre tag. Combed or ring-spun cotton pills less than carded cotton. A small polyester share is fine and helps shape retention.
- Stretch the cuff and hem. It should snap back. A cuff that stays stretched out dies in a month.
- Look at the hood. A good hoodie has a double-layered hood that stands up. A single layer flops.
- Ask about pre-shrinking. Bio-washed or pre-shrunk fabric keeps its size after the first wash. If the seller cannot answer, assume it will shrink.
What we use, and what it costs
Our hoodies are 400 GSM, made in 100% ring-spun super-combed cotton, bio-washed and anti-pilling, and priced around ₹1,800. That is a deliberate pick for the central and north India winter. If you are in the south, start with a layer from our new arrivals and see what the community is voting on next.
One honest note: if you want a hoodie for exactly three weeks a year, a cheaper 300 GSM is the smarter spend. A good 400 is for people who wear it every cold morning from December to February.
How to make a hoodie last past one winter
Wash it inside out in cold water, skip the dryer, and dry it in shade so the print does not crack. Use a mild detergent and avoid softener on fleece, since it coats the fibres and flattens the lining. Fold it, do not hang it, or the shoulders stretch.
Our guide on washing oversized t-shirts at home works almost the same for hoodies. For layering under it, start with a plain tee from our plain t-shirt range.
FAQ
What GSM is best for a hoodie in India?
350 to 400 GSM suits most of India for Dec to Feb. Use 250 to 320 GSM in Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Pune, where winters are mild, and 450+ GSM only for hill trips. Lining matters as much as the number, so prefer brushed fleece inside.
Is 400 GSM too heavy for an Indian winter?
Not in north and central India. A 400 GSM fleece hoodie is right for Delhi, Lucknow, Bhopal and Indore from December to February. It is too heavy for coastal and southern cities, where a 250 to 320 GSM hoodie gets far more wear.
Is 300 GSM enough for winter?
It can be, with a good fleece lining and a layer underneath. A 300 GSM hoodie works through October and November nearly everywhere and all winter in the south. For Delhi in January, you will want 350 to 400 GSM or a jacket on top.
Does a higher GSM hoodie last longer?
Usually yes, but only if the cotton quality is good. Heavy fabric made from short, carded fibres still pills. Look for combed or ring-spun cotton, pre-shrunk fabric and a cuff that snaps back, not just a big GSM number.
How do I stop my hoodie from pilling?
Wash it inside out in cold water, avoid fabric softener and skip the dryer. Pilling comes from friction and short fibres, so combed cotton helps. A fabric shaver clears light pills safely without damaging the weave.
